8 tips to gain confidence in the gym

The other day I was doing cardio after my lifting session and I was having a blast. So much so that I realized I was letting the rhythm of the music take me on a ride, I was dancing, snapping, lip-syncing without a care in the world! It was so liberating. When I was done with my workout I took a moment to take that feeling in and note how far I have come with my confidence in the gym over the years...yes, years.

I remember being that girl in the gym who felt lost, copying other people's moves - hoping and wishing that no one was paying attention to me. Now after years I have learned that no one is paying attention to me, they're too worried about their own workout. And if they are it is because of them, not me. Either they are creeping (quite often lol), admiring my form (possibly), or maybe I am doing a move that they want to try out (most likely). Even if those scenarios aren't true - I don't have to care because I can choose what I believe! I have done my research, I have had my fair share of trail and error and I have continued to show up for myself - that is all you need to worry about; not what judgements are being made in someone else's mind.

So, if you can relate to that first sentence in the second paragraph: this post is for you.

  1. have some sort of a plan - saved IG post, saved YouTube vid, program you've bought, written out workout of your own in your phone notes

  2. make or save a bomb a** playlist to pump you UP - I will link some of my fav Spotify ones below

  3. wear what makes you comfortable!! it's all about FEELING GOOD - I like to bring a sweater or jacket to tie around my waist if I am feeling uncomfy

  4. get a gym buddy (if possible)

  5. get a membership at an all girls gym (if possible)

  6. go to the gym early and/or on the weekends when less people are there (if possible)

  7. align to the belief that you are working out because of what your body has the potential to DO, not for what your body could look like

  8. journaling or even just talking to a friend you trust about any insecurities you may have can help immensely.

Most of this work is going to be outside of the gym as it is mental. Pick a few of these tips that are possible for you to do in and out of the gym. Take baby steps, remember it has taken me and others years. Approaching your workouts from a place of nourishment rather than punishment is the most important factor in this process. You cannot feel comfortable and confident when your mind is constantly being mean to your body. Our brains resist change. Your brain will try to get you to stay home because it is safe so when you're in a new setting like the gym it may play tricks on you to try to stop you from this change. The more you go and practice these things, the easier it will get. I promise, promise, promise x 1000.
